“The Spanish grape takes a major leap forward in the hands of these two winemakers. Flavours are pitch-perfect, elevating the grape’s rich trove of citrus and marrying it to a light savouriness. Grapefruit pith, lemon, lime zest, baked apple and light florals with no shortage of fruit intensity are delivered with a savoury layer à la almond skin and preserved lemon. Comes across heady and aromatic, creamy and long, aided and abetted by saline fresh acidity. Fabulous.”
Halliday Rating: 95 GOLD.
Another collaboration by winemaker friends Eleana Anderson & Jo Marsh, with fruit sourced from the sensational Greenacre Vineyard in Merriang South.
Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed to stainless steel. This year the juice was racked off fluffy lees and then divided into two parcels, One half to an old oak puncheon and the balance to stainless steel. Two select yeast strains were used. At the completion of primary ferment, the puncheon was topped, both parcels were sulphured to prevent malolactic fermentation and matured on lees without stirring for 6 months. The parcels were then blended, stabilised and filtered prior to bottling.
40 dozen were produced.
Succulent, minerally and aromatic, this delicious white varietal from Galicia in Spain’s cool northwest (or perhaps across the border in the northeast of Portugal where it’s known as Alvarinho), offers up beautiful citrus florals, lychee, Meyer lemon, gardenia and honey suckle with mouth-watering texture and freshening limey acidity.
