Mayford 2019 “John Warwick” Chardonnay

“12.9% alcohol but wow does it have a lot to offer.

Intensity of flavour here is fantastic. The palate is buoyant with peach, lime, nectarine and custard apple-like flavours though sweet oak too applies an appropriate boost. You take a sip and think, Whoa, we’re onto something here. Length is excellent, so too power, and personality. There’s a fresh, citrussy sear to this and yet it feels bold and textural throughout. This is a stand-out chardonnay from Mayford.”

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Released July 2021

With 2019 the excellent run of vintages continued in northeast Victoria. We were blessed once again with a warm, dry season that gifted good (but not excessive) yields and small- berried fruit in perfect condition. Harvest took place towards the earlier end of the spectrum with quite a condensed window of ripening across the varietal range.

In 2019 the Chardonnay was hand-picked in small parcels between 22 February and 7 March.  Each batch was chilled overnight before whole bunch pressing directly to French oak barriques.  With this process of sequential filling no two barrels are alike; the first cuts of each press cycle are clean, fruit forward and elegant, the latter cuts with higher solids levels, producing more savoury and textural wines.

After filling to oak (25% new), the juice underwent fermentation by indigenous yeasts and partial malo.  No acid additions were made.  Matured in barrel with regular lees stirring for 11 months prior to blending and filtration.

The 2019 Chardonnay is a wine of poise and precision.

It opens with heady aromatics of warm brioche, crème caramel, poached nectarines, toasted nuts and spice. White flowers (gardenia) and minerally oyster shell characters add lift and complexity.

The palate is lusciously textural with spicy oak and citrus flavours, yet restrained and elegant, balanced by perfectly judged acidity.
