I visited Mayford recently and was fortunate enough to taste through a lot of back vintages and my all-over impression is that this estate – which I’ve always rated highly – operates at another level above my own previous estimations. These wines, across the range, age brilliantly.
This wine will become the perfect case in point. It’s a magnificent release of Mayford shiraz. Deeply fruited, intricately wrought, perfumed, spiced, and eventually then laced with seriously fine, uncompromised tannin. From every angle it’s beautiful. It tastes of plums and cherries, sweet spices, pink flowers, musk and smoked cream, and the way it comes together, swirls and expands, and then marches out through the finish is compelling and then some.
