“Sage, wild thyme, rosemary, black cherry, plum and spice light up the aroma. There is a beautiful moment when dark fruits, herbs, spices and dusty coca awaken on the palate and meld harmoniously with gentle florals, vanillin oak, fine tannins and the silkiest of textures and just keep on going.  Shows a side to malbec we so rarely see in Australia. Simply stunning.” 97 Points, Jeni Port, 2027 Halliday Wine Companion

Released August 2026

Malbec was planted at Mayford in 2016 as a blending partner for Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.  It lends grace and perfume to the structural, complex wine that is the Mayford Ovens Crossing. In 2022, a small parcel was bottled as a stand-alone varietal wine.  The result was so magnificent that Mayford Malbec has become a permanent fixture in the range.

The exceptional 2024 season has taken Mayford Malbec to a new level.  Released as a tribute to Eleana’s mother Pat, on the occasion of her 80th birthday, the 2024 ‘Patricia McKenzie’ Malbec is a perfumed, plush, darkly centred wine that has enormous cellaring potential

Hand-picked, fermented with natural yeasts, hand plunged and basket pressed, the wine spent 11 months in older French oak. From the first day of maceration, it’s heady florals (gardenia, violets, roses) graphite and dark spice characters were a revelation.

Eleana Anderson considers this one of the best wines she’s made and it’s not hard to see why. It’s effusive, it’s deep, it’s plush and it lingers. It carries a wide spread of fine-grained tannin too, which complement the gently ferrous aspect of the fruit beautifully. Red roses, redcurrant, black cherry and mint notes run into sweet spice and iodine notes. It’s juicy, joyous and serious at once. It’s a wine of beauty.’
